When you’re driving on a one-way, it can be tempting to relax more. After all, you don’t have to worry about traffic coming toward you. It’s important to remember that not every driver is familiar with this type of street or our street layout. A new driver or a visitor from out of town can make a wrong turn, and you could be faced with a car coming toward you.

If this happens, it’s essential to try and get the other drivers’ attention. They may not have realized that they’re driving the wrong way. Use your horn to get their attention, but also be prepared if you need to pull over to allow them to pass you. When they realize their error, many drivers will try to stop and turn around to drive in the correct direction.

Choose Your Lane Carefully

Even though the traffic can only go one way, you still need to be aware and choose your lane. If there are multiple lanes, the center lane is usually the safest with the fewest hazards. You’ll reach an intersection at some point on the street, and you’ll need to ensure that you’re in the correct lane for the direction you want to go. You may need to go to the right or left into another one-way street.

If you’re turning left into a one-way street, make sure you’re in the left lane. Use your turn signal to show you’re turning. Once you’re sure it’s safe to do so, turn to the left and continue your travels. If you’re going to turn right, be sure you’re in the far right lane and use your turn signals. Turn to the right as soon as you see it’s safe to do so.

Watch for Street Signs

A one-way road sign has a white arrow on black with the word “One Way” on it. This sign will always point in the direction of travel on that street. The speed limit may also be different from the street you’ve turned in from, so make sure you’re not exceeding the new limit. You will also see a sign before you come to a junction that shows the directions you can go and the lanes to use.

If you want to turn into a side street when driving on a one-way, check for the sign showing which direction you can turn. Some side streets will also be one-way only, and you don’t want to drive the wrong way down a one-way street.
