Automobiles used to be a primary source of pollution in the US. Since 1975, catalytic converters have been installed in every vehicle in the US. These converters changed the dangerous chemicals produced by combustion into harmless ones. Car emissions testing ensures that each Maryland vehicle produces as little pollution as possible. We want to tell you more about how emissions testing works in Bowie, MD.
When Do You Need To Check Car Emissions in Bowie, MD?
When Do You Need an Emissions Test?
Most vehicles in Maryland need to have an emissions test every two years. If your car is brand new or hybrid, your first emissions test will only need to be three years from the first registration.
Where Do You Take the Test?
The MMVA has a network of testing centers throughout Maryland. These centers are part of the Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP), and the MMVA endorses them. Each of these centers can test your vehicle to ensure it meets the emissions requirements to drive on Maryland roads.
What Do You Require for the Test?
You will need to book a test online at one of the VEIP centers. On the day of the test, you’ll need to take your driver’s license, proof of insurance, and either your VEIP reminder or your registration renewal letter. The VEIP letter usually arrives a few weeks before your registration renewal.
How Does the Test Work?
There are several different tests, and the particular test you take depends on the age of your car. Modern cars have an onboard diagnostic system connecting to your computer. Your computer automatically logs any problems with your car, and the information is available on the testing center’s computer. Older vehicles don’t have computers and must undergo more physical testing.
These are the three different tests that you’ll find available at the VEIP testing center. Once your test is complete, you’ll receive a VEIP certificate to confirm that your car meets the required standards.
Diagnostic Test
All vehicles from 1996 onwards perform this test. Your car’s computer will be connected to the testing center computer. Their computer will analyze the information from your emissions control system and produce a full report on your engine and any problems.
Tailpipe Test
The tailpipe test is a requirement for all vehicles built before 1996. This test involves inserting a probe into the tailpipe of your car. The probe detects the level of emissions present in the tailpipe.
Gas Cap Test
The gas cap test involves checking the seals and fit of the gas cap. Worn seals or a gas cap that doesn’t fit can allow fuel vapor to leak out.
